Which is the MOST important trait every leader should have?

Followers usually consider they're leaders to be role models. So it is very important for a leader to be RESPONSIBLE, because an irresponsible person wouldn't pay attention to their obligations and wouldn't complete their duties, but someone who's responsible is capable of handling their tasks even if they don't want to.

Carla said...

The most important trait I believe a leader should have is trustworthiness. One cannot really lead if the others don’t follow him, just because they do not trust him. I also believe this to be the most important trait because in order to be trustworthy they need to have other qualities such as honesty, responsibility and integrity. The moment you have the people's trust is the moment when you really have the power to do what wish and the people will follow him and his decisions.

Carla said...

Maria Cristina I don’t believe that the most important trait a leader should have is responsibility. Because a leader must also portray other qualities such as confidence, honesty, charisma (or enthusiasm), between others which are not included in the sole fact of being responsible.

MariaCristina said...

Carla: It's true. A leader should also be confident, honest, and charismatic in order to attract others, but imagine an irresponsible leader. Where do you think his people will end up??

Maria Cristina I didn't say a leader should not be responsible. I do believe a leader must be responsible, its that I just don't consider it as the most important trait.

MariaCristina said...

Well Carla, then I guess we have two different point of views.

Memo said...

Well, the most important trait a leader should have is the ability to lead and serve. Leaders in every aspect have to lead big or small groups and their fellow followers see that a leader drives the group and at the same time participate in the act the leader gains the groups trust. In respons to Mariacrisitina and Carla the reasponsibility and trustiness come when the leader is doing his work. Sometimes when the leader has a big group for him to lead he depends that others do their work, so not everything goes to the hand of the leader. So a leader should have the ability to manage and serve the group. "A leader is someone who does not says go, but the one who say let's go"

Memo said...

Sorry I forgot to change my name, Pedro it's me Jose Pereyra(memo)

I believe that the most important trait a leader should have is a srtong and clear mind. I say this because if the leader is weak and doesn't think things twice, bad things are going to start taking place in the community. Also, the leader needs the strong mind to make wise decisions that not only benefit himself, but all his people.

Tony said...

In my opinion a leader is someone who either takes power by the support of the people or by force so either way they are respected by the people so I believe a leaders most important trait is his ability to keep an eye on everyone like the Iroquois did, they appointed rulers on each territory and the leader kept an eye on each of them. A leader is also someone whom people feel either scarred enough to follow or share the same idea as the leader and support's them. So another trait would be also have your followers on line.

Tony said...

Ernesto I would say you are right with what you said, but strong mind I believe is not the most important trait because without having the support of the people or power over them you would not be able to use your wisdom over them so most importantly I believe the most important trait is the ability to rule over others.

Ernesto said...

You know Tony, you have a nice point. But the abilty to rule over others doesn't sound a little bit like a dictatorship? I still think that a strong mind is pretty important for a leader to have.

Ernesto said...

Carla, I don't think that trustworthiness is the most important trait of a leader, beacuse if he isn't trustworthy, but is the leader people are going to have to respect him as well. I say that even if the leader is trustworthy it is more important that he has a clear, strong mind.

Tony said...

Well Ernesto I would have to agree with you. Si I have come to believe that a leader doesn't have a MOST important trait, but by the combination of various traits you can have a great leader.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the most important quality a leader should have is modesty. This is because a leader who keeps showing off what he or she has or the simple fact of who they are just makes people enfuriated and most times lead to conflicts.

Memo i dont believe that the ability to lead is a trait of a leader, they are more like a requisition to be a leader, because if you can't LEAD then how on earth will you be a LEADer. I do agree with you on that the leader should be able to serve his people the same way e commands them.

LyanneSantana said...

I believe that the most important trait a good leader can have is his open mind. A good leader needs to agree to changes and make differences in the society or the organization they are. If a leader is not open minded, they can't communicate or agree with others opinions and different point of view. So, a great leader need to have this qualitie for people to follow them.

JavierAude said...

I the most important trait a leader should have is honesty. The leader must always be faithful to its followers. Because if in a group the leader can't be trusted then the group won't follow this person, and he will fail to be an effective leader. A leader needs to always be true to its people to gain thier support and trust

MariaCristina said...

Memo: It's true because if a leader doesn't know how to lead or serve, then no one will take him/her seriously.

Elaine Carlson said...

For me, the most important trait a leader should have is Respect. If a leader isn't respectful of others, even though he is the most important authority in any case,he will not recieve the support he needs from people, and those are the qualities and traits of a negative leader.

Memo said...

Salvador: i am not saying that a leader's most important trait is to have the ability to lead, but have the ability to make the decitions and make them work. And at the same time serve his actions, because when he serves his people will give all the trust.

wanda said...

I believe that the most important trait should be leadership. Because a leader should be able to have "the ability to affect human behavior so as to accomplish a mission"(google.com), in order to get somewhere. He/she should be able to influence others to give their opinions so different point of views can be analized and the best decisions are made.

JavierAude said...

Salvador i must disagree with you. I believe a leader's effectiveness is based on his ability to guide and control people not on their atitude. Atitude doesn't affect a leader's ability to guide efectively a group of people.

LyanneSantana said...

I would have to desagree with Carla. Trust is a great quality, but a good leader needs something more. He could have the trust of the followers, but he could be closed minded and refuse to changes. This quality is important, but there are others that can make a better leader than this.

Elaine Carlson said...

Lyanne a trait a leader shoud have is being open minded. But that is no the MOST important trait he or she should have. There are other things that come first like respect, responisbility, and honesty.

Adriana said...

The most important trait a leader should have is responsability. I belive this is an important value because this tells he will do his duties as promised, be honest and respectful with others. For me responsability one value that is linked to almost all other values. For me a leader who is responsible is also a leader that you can trust and that kind of leader is postive because you will belive on him or her.

Anonymous said...

You have to understand that i never said you were wrong, a leader has to be able to lead, otherwise he is just a random guy who gives away orders.

LyanneSantana said...

I agree with Memo in a way. A leader that doesn't make good decisions and don't have determination will make a poor leader.

marcel said...

I believe that the most important trait every leader should have is being able to control his or her followers. without this nothing is possible, because you might be the most respectful, confident and honest, but if you never get the attention of the followers you will never get the chance to show all your qualities. On the other hand, Maria Cristina I believe that responsability plays a great role on one persons life, but if you don't get the chance to show it as I said before, nobody will notice you, and you will not be a succesful leader.

Adriana said...

Wanda, i disagree with you because leadership is an important trait but not the most important one. A leader should earn its leadership with the people by using other important values.

LyanneSantana said...

Well Elaine, respect has a lot to do with being open minded. If you respect others ideas you are open minded, so you and I have a similar way of thinking.

Moises said...

a leader has to be someone whos ready to be in command

wanda said...

Javier: honesty could be a trait that a leader SHOULD have, but not the most important one. Its true that the members should be able to trust their leader, but that sums up in respect. Because if you respect the others, then you are more cautionous on the lies that you might tell them. You will try to maintain a faithfulness, in order to keep respectful connection with the members.

Cristina said...

in my opinion, i believe that tha most important trait that a good leader shoul have is loyalty. if the leader is true to his followers, they will then know that he can be trusted and will follow and respect his believes. loyalty is very important these days because you cant trust everybody and knowing that there is one person you can trust is really good in a leader.

JavierAude said...

Elaine I must agree and disagree with you. I do believe a leader should have certain respect towards its people, yet i dont think the most important trait a leader should have, even though a leader is not respectful he could be leading the group into a brighter future.

Anonymous said...

Javier I understand what point you are trying to make but imagine this. You live under the control of someone else, and this person goes on about how much money he has and how little you have or that he is your superior and you have to obey him, wouldn't you want to get rid of him?

MariaCristina said...

Marcel: It's true!!! Without being able to control your followers, then technically you can't be a leader!!

Coki said...

i believe the most important trait a leader should have is the ability to lead and the ability to serve. i believe this because a leader should guide other people to better things but the leader should also serve all the others in what they need from him.

wanda said...

adriana: But leaders should be able to lead before they gain other values like trustworthiness.:)

Moises said...

i think your right lyanne

Elaine Carlson said...

Lyanne, you are right I agree with you, respect does go along with being open-minded. But respect is a much more general way of sayin it that covers more subjects like respecting the ideas of others, their appearences their religion, etc.

LyanneSantana said...

Well, you can control your followers, but they might not like you because you are not respectful and honest. This is the way of thinking of an authoritary leader.

JavierAude said...

Wanda that is very true, so yes i will have to change my answer to respect, because it includes honesty and many other important traits. If you truely have respect for someone you wouldn'y lie to them.

Manuel Perez said...

I disagree with you, Javier. No team works well if it can't trust its leader, and this is true from business to governments. However, sometimes leaders cannot be honest with their followers because in truth, not everyone can handle it. It's not the ideal thing, but we live in reality. So although it may be very important, honesty must be administered carefully in difficult times.

The way I see it, a leader's most important trait must be confidence. People rely on leaders to be strong always, so he/she should not waver and keep going. He must believe enough in himself and his ideals in order to make tough decisions, for only a real leader can do this.

Samantha Lehr said...

A leader should be many things including; trustworthy, helpful, kind, strong, and honest. But the most important trait that a leader can have is wisdom. If a leader is wise his decisions will be better and he will have understanding and the respect of everyone around him.

Ana Gonzalez said...

I believe one of the most important trait a leader should have is know how to control his power and to know how to respect his followers opinion. What I want to say with this is that when a person knows it has power, like being a leader, it needs to know what to have power on and how to control it. For example, dictators become bad people because they do not control that power, and forces his followers to do things they don't want to. The other trait is to listen and respect his followers and treat them with respect and equality.

Elaine Carlson said...

Javier, I can agree with you that a leader keeps doing what he does even though he doesn't respect other's ideas. But that would be a negative leader, so it's an important trait a leader should have

Elaine Carlson said...

Javier, I can agree with you that a leader keeps doing what he does even though he doesn't respect other's ideas. But that would be a negative leader, so it's an important trait a leader should have

marcel said...

Lyanne, you are right, but I did'nt say that respect and honesty was not valued, i said that if you are not able to control the followers you will not make a great leader.

Coki said...

i agree with manuel, whatever he said. :D

Arantxa Chahin said...

One of the most important traits a leader should have is Courage. Courage is the ability to have a strait face to face problems. I think that a leader should have courage because a leader is the one person that is in charge to now how deal with people and is the one is to be able to solve the problems of the group. and courage is neede to face those problem with a good and positive attitude>

MarĂa Cristina: Would being responsible be enough?

Carla & Adriana: Would everyone follow just because they trust you?

Memo & Gabriel: Just because they can lead and serve does not mean they can make the right decisions, or does it?

Ernesto: Wouldn't spontaneity be a double-edged sword?

Tony: If you take power by force, how do you gain respecT?

Salvador: Modesty.. don't you have to act tough sometimes, even though you may not be?

Lyanne: Wouldn't an open minded leader be too liberal? Isn't being a little bit conservative good sometimes?

Javier: How is trust and being effective related? weren't Trujillo and Hitler effective?

Elaine: What about respect for yourself?

Wanda: So, it doesn't matter if the leadership is negative, just as long as it's leadership.

Moises: Being in command of what, exactly?

Memo said...

Well Teacher George their's not a single person that make's the right decision. Every leader is different, every leader has it's own follower. What makes a leader is his or hers folowers.

Teacher George I do agree with you, a leader must be tough at times so that he can show that he is in charge but if he doesn't keep this in proportion, and what I mean by this is that if this leader simply keeps on going about who's boss and who's not people will all of a sudden want him ot of there. I also agree with Manuel in that confidence is ONE of the most important traits a leader can have because if he is not confident in what he is doing how can people confide in him all the decisions that are to be made.

MariaCristina said...

Teacher George: Well, being responsible might not be enough, but it is one of the essential traits a leader should have.

Tony said...

Well teacher George I would say that when you take control by force people already see you as a tough person and through the actions you do people will gain respect and know that you gained control in order to lead in a strict matter and know that you will bring balance and order to the group.

Adriana said...

Teacher George: if people trust its leader in everything they will believe ion him or her and follow his or her orders. They will follow their orders because since they trust the leader they will believe that him or her will take the best descion possible always,

Teacher Yorch said...

Arantxa: How does courage help you deal with people?

Cristina: Don't tyrants usually take power using loyalty to the country as the reason?

Samantha: Wisdom is important, but what if no one listens?

Gabriel: Just because you are able does not mean you are good at it.

Manuel: Aren't dictators and tyrants exceedingly confident in themselves?

Marcel: Does it matter HOW they control their people?

Ana: Does it matter which type of power they know how to control to make them a better leader?

Marcos Jose Rodriguez said...

-- Maybe the trait that all leader shuold have, is the hability of persuation.

It is imposible for everyone to agree with the dicissions taken by a leader, even thought those decisions may be just perfect!

The hability to convince people, and show them why your decissions are why is the key forbien accepted as a good leader by the people you are bien leader of.

Those persons are the ones that through their opinions, will label you as a good or bad leader.

The leader is the one that should adjust to people's necessities.

Cristina said...

well MR. RUIZ, i would actually have to agree with you on that one. but its like the saying dont let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game. what you say is true but sometimes you just have to put your trust out there and hope for the leader to turn out ok, if not, you will lose to many chances in your life for nothing.

Samantha Lehr said...

mr.ruiz, no matter what not everyone will listen to one person its what makes everybody human, we are stubborn and opinionated and do not always like to be told what to do. but if a leader is wise and knows what he/she is talking about more people will be inclined to listen not because they feel like they have to but because what he/she is saying makes sense.

Samantha Lehr said...

adriana, you make a good point because without responsibility everything would be a mess, but if a person is not wise or intelligent how will he know what to be responsible about. will he know the right things to do? will he know the things to say to make everyone feel better? or will he just be really organized?

marcel said...

Mr. Ruiz, Yes it does matter because how you control your people reflects the qualities that you really have. And if you are not able to control the followers you will certainly not be a great leader.

Carla said...

Ernesto, I do believe that in order for a leader to be trustworthy and get to become a leader he has to have qualities such as a strong and clear mind in between others

It is true, Teacher George, but that is an exaggeration of confidence, and sometimes madness. What I stated was the most important quality, not the only one, and confidence, as well as others, should be complemented in order to work well in a leader.
